Ubisoft 'does not have a huge R&D; investment in Wii U'

French company says Wii U ports cost less than €1 million

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said the company "doesn't have a huge investment" in Wii U as it's relatively cheap to develop new games for the console and ports cost "less than a million euros".

Asked how much of Ubisoft's R&D; budget has been allocated to Nintendo's new console, Guillemot told investors (via NeoGAF): "Out of seven games we are planning to launch five games are ports, so those are games for which there is a quite small reinvestment to do."

Ubisoft's two original Wii U titles are the most expensive to develop, but the monetary investment is still significantly less than that required for some of its other big multiplatform franchises.

"The two games that are original are ZombiU and Rayman Legends, so those ones of course are more expensive but we are not talking about games today, like we were spending on Ghost Recon or Assassin's Creed. So they are much smaller of cost.

"Because as we've always said when there is such an innovation the need is not to have big production value but to concentrate on the innovation This is what we are trying on Rayman and ZombiU."

Last week Ubisoft reported a 27 percent sales jump for the three month period ended June 31. Games for the PS Vita and 3DS made up just four percent of Ubisoft's total revenue for the quarter.

Guillemot recently said the long lifecycles of PS3 and Xbox 360 have "penalised" Ubisoft because it's risky to create new IPs at this stage of the current generation.

....ummmmmm, think its ports and sequels that might be adding to the problem also Mr Ubisoft

Have everyone on a strict budget and time limit, along with making the majority do ports, great way to spark the creativity of your devs for a new console

Exactly. What are Ubisoft doing? Release an Assassins Creed game that is complete without selling DLC later and we'll talk.

It seems to me, like I assume a lot of devs will do, Ubisoft are just testing the water and waiting to see if the Wii U does well before committing to it. I can't say I blame them.

Yeah, I think Ubisoft are trying to play it safe. The PS4 and NextBox are expected to do at least reasonably well, but the Wii U is a more uncertain proposition. Ubisoft's tone seems less enthusiastic compared to last year... Also, I've always thought that Zombi U looks a bit "cheap" next to big-budget games like RE6 or AC3.

It seems to me Ubisoft take this approach with every Nintendo console launch. It must work for them otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it but it's a bit dull if you already have those games on other platforms.

    Zombie U looked good though.

I wonder how long before they open the floodgates of games ending in 'z'.

Zombie U is likley going to be the only game to get people interested in the Wii U after that we'll be stuck with an endless stream of Mario and Sonic rehashes, and stupid kiddies games, and of course those stupid raving rabbits games.
