Silent Hill studio placed “under review”

Kuju’s confirmed it’s assessing Silent Hill: Downpour studio Vatra’s business after EG.cz reported that the Silent Hill studio’s to close, GI reports.

Said the company in a statement: “The new management team at Kuju have been conducting a strategic review of all aspects of the business, as part of this process the on-going business activities of the Vatra studio are currently under review, however, at this stage no decisions have yet been made.”

Kuju formed Vatra in 2009 with ex-Illusion Software and 2K Czech employees.

A partnership had already been secured with Konami to produce Silent Hill: Downpour and one other project.

Well why are the games bad to average? Is it because the studio is mediocre or is it that they aren’t getting good enough resources?

@1

I am going to say its because the lack of resources especially with how the collection was done with Konami giving the studio an incomplete source code.

Exactly what I’m saying.
SURVIVAL HORRORS A DYIN BREED MAN…

@1 @2 Its neither.

It’s because the creative minds behind the originals no longer work at the company. Team Silent moved on a long time ago.

Indies seem to be still making them. Lone SUrvivor, Amnesia, AMong the sleep, Amnesia: Machine for Pigs. As long as indies make games they want to play I think we still have a genre just won’t see it from triple A studios and publishers.

@4

Downpour was actually really good as far as gameplay and story its the technical aspect that needed more work. Downpour proved you don’t need Team SIlent just more programmers.

@5 It came close, but it was still nowhere near as masterfully creative as 2 or 3.

These developers simply don’t have the capacity to understand the psychology at work in the older games in the way same Team Silent intrinsically knew it. And I don’t think they ever will, because they’re not inside their heads. They will always end up being (sometimes admirable) attempts at emulating the original vision, but never the original creative vision.

The music, especially, has never recovered since Yamaoka left.

@6 But for them its first (major) project and its survival horror, the dying breed so they done solid job.

@7 Why have cotton when you can have silk?

I’m not saying its bad. I’m just saying I’d rather have another masterpiece. Silent Hill 2 and 3 are two of a very small handful of games that I could ever genuinely hand off the label of “art” to.

Amnesia: Machine for Pigs: WHAT THATS OUT? Nope, A quick Google rendered my confusion and anger at my knowledgeableness incorrect. Damn you for that moment of extreme confliction.
True, very true but it would be nice if there were more games like the first dead space and those games didn’t start wandering off into the action scene instead of fulfilling my background urge to scare myself silly (with a game, horror movies are mainly shallow and often focused on the gore fest).

@6 It can’t be that hard if you’ve got enough professionals. Add some crazy music, don’t let the player see what’s coming to kill them for a while, have some ‘OH SHIT, LEG IT’ moments and some dark settings and your done.

@11 There’s far more to the Silent Hill games than a bunch of cheap scares.

The one area thats especially suffered is the psychological depth of the characters. They’ve just been really lacking, and ultimately simplistic. The creature designs haven’t been half as creative as they used to be either, and they don’t tie into the mentality of the lead protagonists as strongly as they used to.

That sort of creativity requires certain creative minds, and without the original people it will always feel like an emulation of the original ideals, instead of an authentic continuation.

Illusion Softworks you mean? Illusion Software are a NSFW kind of different.

Silent Hill has been dead since the second game. The first was a classic.

@13 Aww come on, the third one was great! The fourth one had some serious design problems, true, but the characters were really interesting.

Yeah, stopped caring about Silent hill after Konami disbanded “Team silent.” So everything else to me is crap.

@16

They weren’t disbanded by Konami. They simply left Konami to do other things like getting involved with crap games or simply got out of the industry altogether.

Team Silent was entirely nebulous in the first place it was made up of people within Konami and they either left and went other places within Konami. That why aside from Yamaoka and Masahiro Ito to an extent the roster and roles for each game change alot.

The main problem with Downpour was a complete lack of artistic imagination in monster design, they look bland and entirely non-threatening. Theres nothing other-worldy and off about the enemies they just look like people most of the time, apart from the Weeping Angels which most people I’ve seen or heard from laugh at.

Then theres the massive mistake of creating a completely new, amazing, interesting other world then ruining it by forcing you through it at a million miles an hour as a red blob chases you. Parts like the movie theatre could have been scary, atmospheric and clever, it was none of those things.

Vatra showed they had a somewhat half decent grasp of how to make a decent modern Silent Hill title they just added in a bunch of bullshit for no reason and began to lose the way. Adding in someone that had alot of experience to streamline the story, cut away the chaf and keep the team focused would have made a world of difference.

Also I must say the true doman of the horror genre seems to be experiemental released for free Unity based oddities. Like Slender, SCP Containment Breach and the other SPC experiments, they get that people want to be geniuenly scared and a life-time of horror games has honed the skill to be able to do it.

Lone Survivor is terrible.

The series has never ever been seen as a Triple A blockbuster anyway. The first 3 games were great but they were never a 90+ scorer. And ever since day 1 Konami announced the closure of Team Silent the fans have been putting the games down even before they try them. Yet, they managed to keep the series alive thanx to the details thrown here and there in the story which are very loved by the fans. Mind you, SH’s fans are really one of the smartest communities out there.

@ 4: I’d say it was more down to Vatra’s work ethic. You can’t not pull overtime when you’re missing milestones in any software sector, but especially in the videogames when you have to factor in peak entertainment buying windows.

Oh do tell more. I love reading about the utter mess Climax US made of Origins and this sounds something similar, did they outright just refuse to do overtime?

If you, as a producer, are not going to give a damn about a particular studio and they’re not gonna make magic happen and they’re gonna make shit instead, with the resources you gave them… put them to sleep. We don’t need more bad products such as the shameful Silent Hill HD Collection and the ultra mediocre Silent Hill: Downpour. Yes, we do need jobs, but not for this.
